SUMMARY:Heartland Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Nursing CE approved for 6.17 contact hours by Kirkwood Community College\nNOTE: \nTo obtain a certificate for Nursing Contact Hours the health care professional will need to register for continuing education credit along with check-in at the start of the course\, attend the workshop in its entirety\, and complete the program evaluation form. Certificates will not be awarded for partial credit. A Certificate of Completion indicating the contact hours or CEHs suggested will be issued. For Nursing and most Allied Health Professions in Iowa it is the licensee’s responsibility to determine if the continuing education programs they attend meet the requirements of their professional licensure board. As a courtesy\, Kirkwood lists suggested hours for professions for which the class may meet continuing education requirements\, but the list is not exhaustive. Kirkwood Community College does not pre-approve content with any licensing board/agency unless specifically listed. Licensees are responsible for retaining documentation of the workshop for 4 years after the offering has concluded. Suggested hours\, Nursing Contact Hours: 6.17 (RN’s\, LPN’s\, ARNP’s).  Please note: Late arrivals or early departures will be allowed to attend the workshop- but they will NOT be eligible to earn a continuing education certificate. Participants should be prepared to provide license information when registering. \nFull Brochure here: Heartland Symposium Brochure 2026 \nParticipant Registration: https://heartlandcenter.regfox.com/heartland-symposium-2026 \nVendor Registration: https://heartlandcenter.regfox.com/heartland-symposium-vendor-2026 \nSchedule:  \n7:15: Registration Opens \n7:30: Breakfast and Exhibits Open \n7:50: Opening Announcements \n8:00: Non-Traditional Therapies For The Work Comp Patient: Curtis Witt and Greg Schroeder – Athletico \n\nThis session will discuss non-traditional therapies\, such as dry- needling and Shockwave\, both have been proven to be an effective treatment in helping injured workers return to work. The truths and the myths will be discussed.\n\n9:00: Break and Exhibits \n9:30: Critical Incident Stress Debriefing: Dr. Jim Coyle\, GriefCare Specialist\, Cedar Memorial \n\nWhether you have a workplace violence incident\, a workplace fatality\, or another type of traumatic event in your workplace\, it is important that employees have an opportunity to debrief and grieve. This session will talk about the elements of trauma and give tools to manage crisis care with the importance of self-care in the workplace.\n\n10:35: MTBI and Return to Work– Maranda Bear and Monica Radcliffe\, On with Life \n\nThe session will outline primary symptoms seen by those who have suffered a mTBI in an outpatient neurorehabilitation setting. This will highlight the importance of identifying acute concussion (mTBI) versus persistent post-concussion syndrome as treatment plans may vary depending on severity of concussion symptoms. Session will review the benefits of outpatient neurorehabilitation in facilitating the ability to return-to-work following a mTBI within the scopes of speech pathology\, occupational therapy\, physical therapy\, and other potential referral programs.\n\n11:35: Lunch and Exhibits \n12:30: The Worker with Shoulder Injury: An industrial athlete approach at the Work Injury Recovery Center. – Dr. James Nepola\, University of Iowa \n\nIn this session\, Dr. Nepola will describe the principles and practice of the evaluation and treatment of an injured worker with shoulder pain and a presumed work-related injury. Emphasis will be directed towards optimal\, efficient\, and timely diagnosis and treatment. The concept that a worker with an injury is much like an athlete who needs to return to the field of play as soon as possible\, if possible.\n\n1:35: AI Shifting Adoption to Affirmation: From “Can We?” to “Should We?” In Occupational Health and Safety: Dan Tuuri\, True North Companies \n\nThis session reframes the conversation from unchecked adoption to intentional affirmation. Instead of asking only “Can we use AI for this task?” participants will explore “Should we use AI here\, and under what conditions?” Using practical examples from occupational safety contexts\, the session will introduce accessible frameworks to evaluate ethical considerations\, risk\, and impact\, helping safety leaders align AI use with organizational values\, regulatory expectations\, and worker well-being.\n\n2:35: Breaks and Exhibits \n3:00: Ask the Doc Discussion: Dr. Patrick Hartley and Dr. Jeff Westpheling \n\nAlways the most popular session of the day\, and we save the best for last! Get your hard questions ready for the experts! This is your opportunity to ask those lingering questions. If you wish your questions to be anonymous\, you may send questions prior to the conference to tammi-goerdt@uiowa.edu.\n\n4:00: Adjourn \n \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Sampling Methods for Personal Exposure to Herbicides
DESCRIPTION:Education and Research Centers Industrial Hygiene Webinar Series \nDr. Patrick O’Shaughnessy\, PhD\, CIH\, FAIHA \nAbout the Webinar:\nMany herbicides can exist in the atmosphere as both a droplet and evaporated vapor. Therefore\, methods to assess personal exposures to herbicides samplers must be developed\nto optimize capture of both droplet and vapor phases. This webinar will describe the qualities of two such samplers. Measurements taken in both the lab and field will be presented\nto demonstrate sampler qualities and to detail the considerations needed to properly assess herbicide exposures. \n \nRegister here: http://coeh.berkeley.edu/23IHW0613
